The Overconfidence Effect is the tendency for people's subjective confidence in their judgments to exceed their objective accuracy. We systematically believe we know more, can do more, and can predict better than evidence supports. This manifests in three forms: overestimation (believing we're better than we are), overplacement (believing we're better than others), and overprecision (excessive certainty in our beliefs).
Research across domains—from medicine to finance to driving—consistently shows that people rate their performance as above average (statistically impossible for the majority), assign overly narrow confidence intervals to predictions (90% confidence intervals contain the true answer only 50% of the time), and underestimate project timelines, risks, and costs.
Overconfidence is distinct from the Dunning-Kruger effect: the Dunning-Kruger effect describes how low-skill individuals overestimate their abilities due to metacognitive deficits, while the Overconfidence Effect is universal—even experts in their domains exhibit overconfidence, particularly when making predictions or assessing uncertainty.
The bias is particularly dangerous because confidence feels like competence. We trust our gut, take excessive risks, fail to seek contradictory information, and blame bad outcomes on bad luck rather than poor calibration.

Force yourself to quantify uncertainty by providing ranges instead of single numbers:
Action: For any estimate, provide three ranges: 50%, 75%, and 90% confidence intervals. Track which interval contains the actual outcome.
Before making a decision, imagine the plan has failed catastrophically and work backward to explain why:
Action: Schedule a 30-minute pre-mortem for any major project or decision. Document 10+ specific failure modes.
Actively hunt for information that contradicts your confident belief:
Action: Before finalizing a judgment, identify three pieces of evidence that could disconfirm it, then investigate whether that evidence exists.
Replace inside view confidence ("our project is special") with outside view base rates:
