Society is a contract across generations. Revolution destroys the accumulated wisdom of generations — institutions that have survived contain embedded knowledge about human nature that abstract theorists ignore at their peril.

Aristotle — Politics

A mixed constitution distributing power across classes, ruled by law rather than the arbitrary will of any faction, is the most stable form of government. Rule of law prevents mob rule and factional chaos.

Cicero — De Re Publica

A balanced republic — sustained by civic virtue, custom, tradition, and intergenerational institutions — is more durable than any constitution founded on pure reason alone.

Russell Kirk — The Conservative Mind (1953)

1. Audit Before You Demolish

• Ask what function an existing institution or norm serves before eliminating it
• Assume it encodes solutions to problems that have been forgotten
• Seek testimony from those who have lived within the institution longest

2. Prefer the Known to the Unknown

• Incremental adjustment reveals unintended consequences early
• Wholesale redesign risks catastrophic, irreversible failure
• Gradual change is not timidity — it is accumulated wisdom in practice

3. Anchor Reform in Tradition

• Frame change as restoring or fulfilling the original purpose of institutions
• Invoke precedent, not abstraction, when arguing for reform
• Gradual change preserves continuity; abrupt change creates power vacuums

4. Resist Abstract Utopias

• Every revolutionary movement promises perfection and delivers coercion
• Distrust any scheme whose benefits are entirely future and whose costs are entirely present
• The longer the chain of "first we must destroy X", the more suspicious you should be

5. Maintain Continuity

• Abrupt breaks in law, custom, or governance create vacuums that authoritarian movements exploit
• Preserve the forms of constitutional government even when inconvenient
• Legitimacy is accumulated slowly and lost quickly
