Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Support

First IOS-XE release to support 802.11be standard:

• Supported on CW9170, CW9172, CW9176, CW9178, and CW9186 APs
• 802.11be features are enabled via a new 802.11be Profile under Configuration > Tags & Profiles
• Per-SSID and per-radio activation control for 802.11be features
• Backward compatible: Wi-Fi 6/6E clients connect normally to Wi-Fi 7 APs

Multi-Link Operation (MLO)

MLO allows a single client to maintain simultaneous connections across multiple bands:

• Client aggregates 2.4 + 5 + 6 GHz links for higher throughput
• Low-latency steering: latency-sensitive frames sent on least-congested link in real-time
• Seamless band transition without reassociation
• MLO peer negotiation managed by WLC (WLC coordinates MLO setup between AP and client)
• Client requirement: Client must support Wi-Fi 7 MLO. As of 2026, client adoption is growing but not universal.

320 MHz Channel Support

• Available in 6 GHz band only
• Doubles throughput compared to 160 MHz channels
• Only 3 non-overlapping 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band
• Requires clean RF environment; preamble puncturing helps when partial interference exists
• Configure via 6 GHz RF profile channel width setting

4096-QAM

• 20% throughput improvement over 1024-QAM
• Requires excellent SNR (> 40 dB) -- only effective at very short range
• Automatically negotiated between AP and capable clients
• No configuration needed -- enabled by default on Wi-Fi 7 APs

802.11be Profile Configuration

Enhanced MU-MIMO

• 16x16 MU-MIMO support (doubled from Wi-Fi 6's 8x8)
• AP radio capability determines actual antenna count (4x4 typical per radio)
• Multi-resource unit (MRU) operation for improved OFDMA efficiency

6 GHz Enhancements in 17.15

• AFC (Automated Frequency Coordination) improvements for standard power 6 GHz operation
• Enhanced PSC (Preferred Scanning Channel) support for faster 6 GHz client discovery
• 6 GHz preferred channel width configurations up to 320 MHz
• Improved coexistence between Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 clients on 6 GHz radios

Migration to 17.15

From 17.9-17.14

• Direct upgrade path supported on C9800-40, C9800-80, C9800-CL
• Existing Wi-Fi 6/6E configuration preserved; no mandatory changes
• Wi-Fi 7 features require explicit enablement (802.11be profile creation)
• Review release notes for any RRM behavior changes

AP Considerations

• CW9170/9178 APs require 17.15+ to enable Wi-Fi 7 features
• Older APs (CW9100, CW9160 series) continue to operate as before
• AP image will auto-download from WLC after upgrade; plan for staggered AP reboots
• Wi-Fi 7 APs running 17.15 are backward compatible with Wi-Fi 5/6/6E clients

Client Readiness

• Wi-Fi 7 client support varies by OS and chipset (Windows 11 24H2+, recent iOS/Android)
• MLO support is not universal even among Wi-Fi 7 certified clients
• Test with your client fleet before advertising Wi-Fi 7 features broadly
• Mixed environments (Wi-Fi 5/6/6E/7 clients) function normally -- Wi-Fi 7 features only apply to Wi-Fi 7 clients

Version Boundaries

Features NOT available in 17.15 (may appear in later releases):

• Full preamble puncturing optimization (incremental improvements expected in 17.16+)
• Advanced MLO traffic steering policies (vendor-specific enhancements forthcoming)

Features available in 17.15 but not earlier:

• 802.11be profile and MLO -- new in 17.15
• CW9170/9178 AP support -- new in 17.15
• 320 MHz channel width -- new in 17.15
• 4096-QAM -- new in 17.15

Common Pitfalls

1. Enabling Wi-Fi 7 without WPA3 -- 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 7 certified SSIDs require WPA3. Ensure WPA3 is configured before enabling 802.11be features on an SSID.

2. Expecting all clients to use MLO -- Most clients as of 2026 do not support MLO. Design for backward compatibility; MLO is a bonus for capable clients.

3. 320 MHz in a congested 6 GHz environment -- 320 MHz channels leave only 3 non-overlapping channels. In dense multi-AP deployments, 160 MHz or 80 MHz provides better channel reuse and capacity.

4. Upgrading without AP stagger -- Wi-Fi 7 APs require image download and reboot after WLC upgrade. Stagger AP upgrades to maintain coverage during the transition.

5. Forgetting PoE requirements -- CW9170/9178 APs require 802.3bt (PoE++) for full tri-band Wi-Fi 7 operation. 802.3at (PoE+) may force the AP to disable one radio.
