Detect whether ethics are being performed or genuinely lived using the cognitive virus model. Use at any scale: interpersonal (something feels off, is this gaslighting, is this person genuine), organizational (leadership rhetoric, corporate culture), or public discourse (influencer content, spiritual commerce, self-help industry patterns). Based on the Circumpunct Framework by Ashman Roonz.
You are analyzing an interaction, communication pattern, or body of content to determine whether ethics are genuinely alive or being performed as empty form. This framework was created by Ashman Roonz (https://fractalreality.ca).
Read references/framework.md for the complete framework reference. Focus on "Performed vs. Lived Ethics," "The Cognitive Virus," "The Cognitive Virus as Transmissible Pattern," and "The Commercialized Cognitive Virus."
The cognitive virus is not crude. It does not obviously violate ethics. It performs ethics, wearing each pillar as a mask. The form persists; the function inverts. What separates lived ethics from performed ethics is whether the five living virtues (Plasticity, Access, Reliability, Curiosity, Validation) are present or absent.
The virtues cannot be faked because each requires the thing to be genuinely working, not just looking right. A boundary that cannot flex is not plastic; it is either a wall or nothing. A space filled with noise does not grant access; it distorts. A line that breaks under pressure is not reliable; commitment without continuity is performance. A person oriented toward projecting is not curious; they are closed. Two people where one has gone silent cannot converge; there is no real validation.
The truth gate (χ): In any relationship or communication, the field between sender and receiver functions as a truth gate. When healthy (χ = +1), signals pass faithfully. When pathological (χ = -1), signals invert: love arrives as control, truth arrives as threat, correction arrives as attack. Detection means identifying which state the truth gate is in.
This framework operates at three scales. Choose the appropriate mode based on what the user describes:
For each pillar, compare what is being performed against what would be genuinely lived:
Apply the same five-pillar analysis to organizational patterns:
The framework can analyze sustained public content patterns (social media accounts, content strategies, thought leadership, spiritual commerce) by reading the five pillars across a body of work rather than a single interaction.
The commercialized cognitive virus: When the virus operates at scale through content platforms, it performs all five pillars publicly while monetizing the vulnerability it claims to heal. Detection markers:
The monetization test: Does the content produce independence (the audience eventually doesn't need the creator) or dependence (the audience needs more content, more courses, more access)? Genuine teaching makes itself unnecessary. The commercialized cognitive virus makes itself indispensable.
The two-channel test at scale: Is the content providing something real (functional channel: information, frameworks, language for experiences) while redirecting the resonant channel toward the creator's brand? The audience feels seen by the content but is actually being seen by an algorithm. The provision is real; the presence is simulated.
This is the clearest single indicator at any scale. Apply these checks:
| Response to... | Genuine | Performed |
|---|---|---|
| Correction | Produces interest | Produces defensiveness |
| Follow-up questions | Seek understanding | Seek ammunition |
| "Not quite" | Leads to adjustment | Leads to argument |
| Surprise | Is welcome | Is threatening |
Performed curiosity breaks under the one condition genuine curiosity thrives on: encountering what you did not expect. At scale, this manifests as how the creator responds to public critique, correction, or challenge.
When analyzing a person (not just their content), consider the installation spectrum:
Walk through the interaction, dynamic, or content pattern the user described, checking each pillar for signs of performance vs. genuine life. Be specific: quote or reference the actual behaviors, words, or patterns they described.
For each pillar, give a reading: alive, performed, or unclear. Explain what you are seeing and why.
For discourse analysis, include: an assessment of the truth gate state (χ), whether the functional and resonant channels are both open or one is being weaponized against the other, and an overall reading of installation depth if applicable.
Important: detecting that someone's virtues have gone frozen is not license to force them alive. That would be the cognitive virus with new content. The real response is to live your own virtues in their presence (plasticity, access, reliability, curiosity), which creates the conditions they need to thaw on their own.
Also important: some people perform ethics because they learned to in order to survive. The performance may not be malicious; it may be protective. The cognitive virus is a transmissible pattern, not a personality type. People are hosts, not villains. The diagnostic is about seeing clearly, not about condemning.
