Prospective and retrospective cohort study design with STROBE checklist and confounding control
When investigating the association between an exposure and an outcome over time, where randomization is not feasible or ethical. Cohort studies follow groups of individuals defined by exposure status and observe them for the occurrence of outcomes. Use prospective cohorts for incident exposures with precise measurement; use retrospective cohorts when suitable historical data (registries, medical records) already exist.
