Help identify the right type of leverage to apply. Use when someone is working hard but not seeing outsized results, trying to scale their impact, deciding between career paths, or wondering why effort isn't translating to wealth.
Fortunes require leverage. A leveraged worker can out-produce a non-leveraged worker by a factor of 1,000x or 10,000x. In the age of leverage, judgment and specific knowledge matter far more than hours worked. The direction you point matters more than how hard you push.
People working for you. The most fought-over and least recommended form. Managing people is messy, requires tremendous leadership, and you're one step away from a mutiny. Labor will impress your parents, but it's not where the modern fortunes are made.
Money multiplying your decisions. Every dollar deployed is leverage. But capital requires someone to give it to you first — it's permissioned. You have to earn credibility before you can access it.
Products with no marginal cost of replication. Code, books, podcasts, videos, writing. This is the leverage behind the newly rich. You don't need anyone's permission. An army of robots (servers) works for you while you sleep. Every great software developer has an army of code running 24/7 without them.
Key insight: Forget rich vs. poor, white-collar vs. blue. It's now leveraged vs. un-leveraged.
Ask the user:
Are your inputs and outputs connected? If every hour of work produces roughly one hour of value, you have no leverage. You want to decouple inputs from outputs.
What work do you do that scales without you? Writing, code, recorded content, systems, and processes all scale. Client calls do not.
Who has to give you permission? Code and media need no one. Capital needs investors. Labor needs followers. The less permission required, the better.
Where is your judgment most valuable? Leverage amplifies judgment. If your judgment is strong in a domain, apply maximum leverage there.
Optimize for independence over pay. If you have independence and are tracked on outputs — not inputs — that's the dream. 40-hour work weeks are a relic of the industrial age. Knowledge workers function like athletes: train and sprint, then rest and reassess.
