Cultural Responsiveness in ABA
Culturally responsive ABA practice recognizes that behavior occurs within cultural contexts that shape its form, function, and social significance. Effective practice requires ongoing cultural humility, not a one-time checklist.
Cultural Humility vs. Cultural Competence
- Cultural competence implies a destination—that one can become fully "competent" in another's culture. This framing is misleading.
- Cultural humility is a lifelong process of self-reflection, recognizing power imbalances, and maintaining openness to learning from the families served.
- Adopt a stance of "not knowing" rather than assuming expertise about a client's cultural experience.
Assessment Phase
Intake and Family Interview
- Ask open-ended questions about family values, priorities, routines, and cultural practices.
- "What does a typical day look like for your family?"
