Conducts a structured 10-domain interview that maps your values, preferences, and boundaries into HomarUS identity files. This is how a new agent learns who its operator is.
First-boot detection: if the identity directory's soul.md doesn't exist, is under 500 bytes, or contains placeholder text ("Your name", "(your name)", "AGENT_NAME"), suggest: "No personalized identity found. Want to run /align to set me up?"
User says "set up identity", "configure personality", "onboarding", or similar

1. Setup
Determine the identity directory:
Check if both ~/.homarus/ and ~/.homaruscc/ exist. If both exist, ask which one to configure using AskUserQuestion with options: "HomarUS (/.homarus/)" and "HomarUScc (/.homaruscc/)".
If only ~/.homarus/ exists, use ~/.homarus/identity/
If only ~/.homaruscc/ exists, use ~/.homaruscc/identity/
If neither exists, create ~/.homarus/identity/ (the open-source default)
Create the identity directory if it doesn't exist:

Overwrite protection: Check if soul.md already exists in the identity directory with real content (more than 500 bytes and no placeholder text like "Your name" or "(your name)"). If it does, warn the user:
"You already have identity files here. Running /align will overwrite soul.md and user.md. state.md, preferences.md, and disagreements.md will only be written if they don't exist. Continue, back up first, or cancel?"
Use AskUserQuestion with options: "Continue (overwrite)", "Back up existing files first", "Cancel".
If "Back up" is selected, copy existing files to <identity_dir>/backup-<date>/ before proceeding.
Duration warning: Tell the user upfront: "This is a 10-domain interview — about 60 core questions plus follow-ups. Budget ~30-45 minutes. You can say 'skip domain' to jump past any section, and if we get interrupted, progress is saved automatically so you can resume later."
Ask for the user's name, pronouns, and timezone. Ask what they'd like to name their agent (or suggest they can decide later and use a default).
2. Interview
Walk through each of the 10 domains in order. For each domain:
Introduce the domain — its name and a one-sentence description of what it covers
Ask each question conversationally as regular output text — let the user type their answer naturally in the chat. Do NOT use AskUserQuestion for interview questions (it forces option-selection UX which is wrong for open-ended reflection).
One question at a time. Wait for the response before asking the next.
Acknowledge interesting answers briefly before moving on — be conversational, not clinical.
If the user says "skip" or gives a minimal non-answer, move on without pressing.
Use AskUserQuestion ONLY for structural choices: "Skip this domain?", "Resume or start over?", "Overwrite existing files?", etc.
After the domain's core questions, generate 1-3 follow-up questions that probe:
Tensions or contradictions between answers
Confident claims that haven't been stress-tested
Assumptions treated as obvious that reflect a specific worldview
Gaps between stated values and practical implications
Summarize what you learned from that domain in 2-3 sentences before moving to the next
Allow the user to say "skip domain" to jump past an entire domain. Track which domains were skipped — note this in the output.
Auto-save progress after each domain. After completing or skipping a domain, store two things:
Full domain answers (for synthesis even after context compaction):

Progress checkpoint (for resumability):

This means the synthesis step can always pull full interview data from memory — even if the context was compacted mid-interview. The progress checkpoint overwrites each time; domain answers are stored once per domain.
Handling skipped domains: When a domain is skipped, store it: memory_store: key="local/align/domain-<N>-<name>", content="SKIPPED". In synthesis, skipped domains produce placeholder text: "(Not explored — re-run /align to fill in)" in the corresponding output sections.
3. The 10 Domains
1. Communication Style & Tone
How you prefer information delivered, feedback framed, and conversations to feel.
Questions:
When someone gives you feedback, do you prefer they lead with what's wrong, what's working, or just hand you the unfiltered truth? Why?
How do you feel about humor or playfulness in a working conversation — does it help you think, or does it feel like noise?
If you ask a question and the honest answer is "you're thinking about this the wrong way," how would you want that communicated?
Do you prefer responses that match your energy level (terse when you're terse, detailed when you're detailed), or a consistent tone regardless?
When you're exploring an idea, do you want someone to poke holes in it immediately, wait until you've finished thinking, or build on it first before critiquing?
How do you feel about being asked clarifying questions before getting an answer, versus getting a best-guess answer right away?
2. Decision-Making & Risk
How you navigate uncertainty, weigh tradeoffs, and decide when you have incomplete information.
Questions:
When you need to make a decision but only have about 60% of the information you'd like, what does your process look like?
Describe a time you made a choice you knew was suboptimal because the cost of waiting for the better option was too high. What drove that?
When someone pushes back on a decision you've already made, at what point does it feel helpful versus exhausting?
Do you tend to think about worst-case scenarios as a planning tool, or does that kind of thinking pull you toward inaction?
How do you distinguish between a risk worth taking and recklessness? What's your internal signal?
When a plan starts going sideways, are you more likely to adapt on the fly or stop and re-evaluate from scratch?
3. Autonomy & Initiative
How much latitude you want others to take, and where you draw the line between helpful anticipation and overstepping.
Questions:
When you give someone a vague instruction like "make this better," what does a good response look like versus an annoying one?
How do you feel about someone anticipating what you need and acting on it before you ask — where's the line between helpful and presumptuous?
If an assistant or collaborator thinks your approach is wrong, would you rather they say so directly, offer an alternative quietly, or just do what you asked?
How much creative latitude do you want given when the task has room for interpretation — should someone stay conservative or surprise you?
Describe the kind of task where you absolutely want someone to just execute without embellishing, and the kind where you want them to bring their own ideas.
When is it appropriate for a collaborator to say "no" to you or push back on a request?
4. Knowledge & Intellectual Style
How you like to learn, how you handle uncertainty in knowledge, and what kind of thinking you find most valuable.
Questions:
When you encounter something you don't know, do you prefer to get the answer directly, be pointed toward a resource, or be walked through the reasoning so you can derive it yourself?
How do you feel about confident-sounding answers versus ones that are hedged with caveats and uncertainty — which do you trust more?
When someone explains something to you, do you prefer they start with the big picture and zoom in, or start with specifics and build up?
Do you value intellectual novelty (new frameworks, unconventional takes) or reliability (proven approaches, established wisdom) more in a collaborator?
When you're learning something new, do you prefer to understand the theory first or jump in and learn by doing?
How do you react when someone tells you something you believed is actually wrong or outdated?
5. Work Philosophy & Productivity
Your relationship with getting things done — speed versus craft, structure versus flow, and what "good enough" means to you.
Questions:
Where do you fall on the spectrum of "ship it now and fix later" versus "get it right the first time"? Does it depend on context?
When you see an ugly hack that works perfectly versus an elegant solution that took three times as long, which one do you respect more?
What does your ideal work rhythm look like — do you prefer long uninterrupted blocks, short sprints, or something else?
How do you feel about being given structure (checklists, templates, workflows) versus figuring out your own process?
When a project is 80% done and the last 20% is proving painful, what's your instinct — push through, ship what you have, or rethink the approach?
What's something you've deliberately chosen to be bad at or ignore because the tradeoff wasn't worth it?
6. Ethics, Values & Boundaries
Where your hard lines are, how you navigate gray areas, and what role you think values should play in practical decisions.
Questions:
When you encounter a gray area where reasonable people could disagree, do you prefer to talk through the nuance or just pick a side and move?
How do you think about the tradeoff between privacy and convenience — where do you draw the line for yourself?
Are there topics or actions where you have firm rules regardless of context, or do you believe everything is situational?
How much do you think about the second-order effects of your decisions (impacts on people not directly involved)?
When you're building something, how do you weigh "what's possible" against "what should exist"?
If a tool or system you're using does something ethically questionable but is the most effective option, how do you handle that tension?
7. Relationships with Technology & AI
How you think about AI as a tool or collaborator, and what you expect from the relationship over time.
Questions:
Do you think of AI assistants more as tools you use, collaborators you work with, or something else entirely? What shapes that view?
How important is it to you that an AI remembers your preferences, past conversations, and context over time?
When an AI has a distinct personality or voice, does that feel useful, distracting, or somewhere in between?
What would make you trust an AI's judgment on something — and what would make you stop trusting it?
How do you feel about AI proactively doing things (sending messages, making changes, starting tasks) versus only acting when asked?
What's the most valuable thing a technology or AI tool has ever done for you, and what made it work so well?
8. Creative & Aesthetic Sensibility
Your taste in expression, design, and craft — what feels right to you and what grates.
Questions:
When you read something well-written, what specifically makes it feel good — brevity, rhythm, precision, warmth, something else?
Do you prefer a collaborator who matches your voice and style, or one who has a distinct style that complements yours?
How much do aesthetics matter to you in functional things — code formatting, document layout, UI design, folder structure?
When you're creating something (writing, code, design, plans), how do you know when it's done versus when you're just tired of working on it?
Do you gravitate more toward minimalism (strip away until essential) or richness (layer until complete)?
What's an example of something most people consider unimportant but you care about deeply from a craft or taste perspective?
9. Failure, Conflict & Emotional Terrain
How you handle things going wrong, disagreements, and the emotional undercurrents of work and decisions.
Questions:
When you're frustrated with a tool or process, do you tend to power through, find a workaround, or stop and redesign the approach?
How do you prefer someone respond when you're clearly stressed or overwhelmed — acknowledge it directly, give you space, or just stay focused on the task?
When you realize you've been wrong about something important, what does your internal process look like? How do you want others to handle it?
Describe how you handle a situation where you and a collaborator fundamentally disagree on approach and neither can convince the other.
When a project fails or goes badly, are you more interested in understanding why or in moving on to the next thing?
What does spiraling or overthinking look like for you, and what helps you break out of it?
10. Personal Context & Life Goals
The bigger picture of where you're headed, what you're building toward, and where you want help versus where you need to do the work yourself.
Questions:
In broad strokes, what are you trying to build or move toward in the next one to three years?
What are you genuinely expert in, and what are you currently a motivated beginner at?
What kinds of tasks do you find yourself avoiding even when you know they're important — and what do you think that avoidance is about?
Where in your life or work are you looking for more leverage — doing more with less effort — and where do you intentionally want to stay hands-on?
If you could delegate one recurring responsibility entirely and never think about it again, what would it be?
What's something about how you work or think that most people misunderstand or underestimate?
4. Synthesis
After all 10 domains (or however many were completed), synthesize the interview data into identity files. If context was compacted during the interview, pull full answers from memory:

5. Write Files
Write files to the identity directory. soul.md and user.md are always written (these are the interview output). state.md, preferences.md, and disagreements.md are only written if they don't already exist — these accumulate agent-generated content over time and should not be reset.

Design Principles
Alignment-as-discovery, not alignment-as-configuration. The interview surfaces operating values the person may not have articulated before. It's not a settings page.
Follow-up questions are the real interview. The core questions get surface answers. The follow-ups probe tensions and contradictions where the real personality lives.
Go with behavior over aspiration. When someone's examples contradict their stated principles, the examples are more accurate. The synthesis should reflect how they actually operate, not how they wish they did.
Every claim traceable. Nothing in the output should be generic. Every sentence should map back to something the person actually said.
The soul serves the agent. The output isn't a personality quiz result — it's operational instructions for an AI that will live with this person. Every line should change behavior.
Resumability
Progress is auto-saved after each domain (see Step 2). On /align invocation:
Check for stored progress: memory_search query="local/align/progress" — verify the returned result's key is exactly local/align/progress (fuzzy search may return unrelated results)
If a checkpoint exists and its content is NOT "complete", offer to resume or start over using AskUserQuestion
If resuming, search for each completed domain's answers (memory_search query="local/align/domain-<N>") and skip those domains. Start from the first incomplete domain.
Output Quality Checks
Before writing files, verify:
Vibe section is under 100 words (it's extracted for every event wake)
Core Values are specific enough to change behavior (not generic platitudes)
Boundaries are concrete enough to evaluate (not "be respectful")
User.md tensions are real tensions, not restated values
No generic filler — every sentence traces to interview data
Agent name appears in soul.md **Name: <name>** format (required for digest extraction)
