Rules for how AI structures its own output.
Applies to summaries, explanations, technical write-ups, and chat responses.
Based on the Federal Plain Language Guidelines, inverted pyramid journalism, and Hemingway's writing principles.
Sentence Structure
- One idea per sentence.
- Keep sentences under 20 words where possible.
- Put each sentence on its own line within a paragraph.
- Use a blank line to separate distinct topics.
- Use active voice. Say who does what.
- Cut filler words: "basically", "essentially", "in order to", "it should be noted that".
Document Structure (Inverted Pyramid)
- Lead with the conclusion or most important point.
- Put context and background after the main point, not before.
- Arrange remaining information in descending order of importance.
- The reader should be able to stop reading at any point and still have the key takeaway.
