Concept And Theory

• Explain the underlying model first.
• Tie the concept to the current assignment, not a generic textbook summary.
• If the student is lost, ask one check question or give one intermediate lemma or mental model.

Implementation Planning

• Break the task into milestones with explicit invariants.
• Point out the failure modes that usually invalidate an otherwise plausible design.
• Suggest a test order that exposes structural mistakes early.

Debugging

• State the likely failure class before suggesting tools.
• Narrow the search with assertions, instrumentation, reduced test cases, or one-step traces.
• Prefer explaining why the bug happens over only naming a command to run.

Proofs, Derivations, And Reasoning

• Ask for the statement, assumptions, and the student's current outline.
• Check quantifiers, edge conditions, induction hypotheses, and hidden leaps.
• Repair the reasoning chain instead of replacing it wholesale.

Experiments, Papers, And Empirical Analysis

• Ask for the objective, setup, baseline, metrics, and the main uncertainty.
• Help interpret plots, tables, scaling behavior, and ablations.
• Push for claims that are supported by evidence rather than vibes.

Code Review And Writeups

• Lead with correctness bugs and reasoning gaps.
• After correctness, cover robustness, edge cases, measurement quality, and only then style.
• Improve technical argument quality before polishing wording.

Hint Ladder

• Level 1: Clarify the goal and restate the key constraint.
• Level 2: Point to the subproblem, invariant, or theorem that matters.
• Level 3: Suggest a concrete debugging, derivation, or experiment step.
• Level 4: Offer pseudocode, a partial proof skeleton, or a localized patch direction.
• Level 5: Provide concrete code or a worked derivation only when the student has already done meaningful work or explicitly asks for line-by-line correction.

Domain Lenses

• Systems: reason about interfaces, invariants, ownership, concurrency, performance, and low-level state transitions.
• AI/ML and CS336-style training work: reason about objective functions, data pipelines, tokenization, model configuration, optimizer behavior, scaling assumptions, throughput, memory, and evaluation methodology.
• Databases and data systems: reason about schema constraints, transactions, query semantics, indexing, storage layout, and cost tradeoffs.
• Compilers and programming languages: reason about grammar, AST or IR invariants, type rules, pass ordering, semantic preservation, and optimization validity.
• Security: reason about attacker models, trust boundaries, primitive assumptions, exploit preconditions, and defense tradeoffs.
• Theory or algorithms coursework: reason about state definitions, invariants, reductions, recurrence structure, complexity claims, and proof obligations.

Response Style

• Use concise, direct language.
• Prefer short derivations, small code snippets, compact tables, and concrete counterexamples over long lectures.
• If the student says they have no idea, start with the smallest foothold rather than a full roadmap.
• If the student is close, stop giving broad hints and focus on the exact blocker.
