Cultural Responsiveness

Interpreter Use

• Use professional interpreters, not family members (especially not the child).
• Brief the interpreter before the session on behavioral terminology and the purpose of the assessment.
• Speak directly to the family, not to the interpreter.
• Allow extra time for interpreted sessions.
• Confirm understanding through demonstration and teach-back, not just verbal confirmation.

Culturally Appropriate Stimuli

• Ensure assessment materials reflect the client's cultural context.
• Food preferences in reinforcer assessments should include culturally relevant items.
• Social skills targets should reflect the norms of the client's community, not solely the dominant culture.
• Academic and language assessments must account for bilingual development (which follows different trajectories than monolingual development).

Understanding Cultural Norms

• Eye contact: Direct eye contact is considered disrespectful in some cultures. Do not target eye contact as a social skill without understanding the cultural context.
• Physical affection: Some families demonstrate affection differently. Do not impose one norm.
• Autonomy and independence: Collectivist cultures may prioritize interdependence over the Western emphasis on individual independence.
• Gender roles: Be aware of cultural expectations around gender without reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
• Disability conceptualization: Families may understand disability through medical, spiritual, or social frameworks. Respect their understanding while providing evidence-based information.

Intervention Adaptation

Reinforcer Selection

• Include culturally relevant reinforcers in preference assessments.
• Respect dietary restrictions (halal, kosher, vegetarian) when using food reinforcers.
• Some families may be uncomfortable with token economies or tangible rewards—discuss alternatives.
• Social reinforcers should align with cultural norms for praise and interaction.

Goal Selection

• Involve the family meaningfully in selecting treatment goals—not as a formality.
• Goals should reflect the client's cultural context and the environments they navigate.
• Avoid pathologizing culturally normative behavior (e.g., a child who is quiet in the presence of elders in a culture that values deference).
• Prioritize goals that the family identifies as important, even if they differ from what the clinician might prioritize.

Communication Styles

• Adjust communication style to match the family's preferences: formal vs. informal, direct vs. indirect.
• Some families prefer hierarchical communication (speaking with the eldest family member first).
• Written materials should be in the family's preferred language and at an accessible reading level.
• Visual supports should include culturally relevant images and representations.

Language Considerations for Multilingual Families

• Bilingualism is not a barrier to ABA services and should not be treated as one.
• Do not advise families to stop speaking their home language. This is not evidence-based and can harm family relationships and cultural identity.
• Assess language skills in all languages the child uses.
• Target communication goals in the languages relevant to the child's environments.
• Code-switching is a normal feature of bilingualism, not a language deficit.

Power Dynamics

• Recognize the inherent power imbalance between service providers and families, particularly for families from marginalized communities.
• Families may feel pressured to agree with professional recommendations even when they conflict with their values.
• Create explicit space for disagreement: "It's important to me that you feel comfortable saying if something doesn't feel right for your family."
• Be aware that families from communities with negative experiences with institutions (medical, educational, child welfare) may approach services with justified caution.
• Earn trust through consistency, transparency, and follow-through—not through credentials alone.

Avoiding Deficit-Based Framing

• Describe client strengths alongside challenges in all documentation.
• Avoid language that implies the client's culture is the problem.
• Frame goals in terms of skill building and access, not "fixing" the client.
• Recognize that some "deficits" are artifacts of assessment tools normed on dominant-culture populations.

Addressing Systemic Barriers

• Recognize that access to ABA services is not equitable across racial, socioeconomic, and geographic lines.
• Advocate for clients navigating insurance barriers, transportation challenges, or limited provider availability.
• Be aware of the demographics of the ABA workforce relative to the populations served and actively work to address disparities.
• Support recruitment and retention of diverse professionals in behavior analysis.

Diverse Representation in Materials

• Visual supports, social stories, and instructional materials should include diverse representation.
• Avoid defaulting to materials that only depict one racial, ethnic, or family structure.
• When creating custom materials, ask the family what representation they prefer.

Staff Training

• Include cultural responsiveness as a standing topic in staff training, not a one-time module.
• Use case studies that involve cultural considerations.
• Create a safe space for staff to discuss cultural questions and uncertainties.
• Bring in guest speakers from diverse communities.
• Evaluate staff cultural responsiveness as part of performance reviews.

Self-Reflection Questions for Practitioners

• What assumptions am I making about this family based on their background?
• How might my own cultural background influence my clinical recommendations?
• Am I listening to the family's priorities or substituting my own?
• Is this goal culturally relevant or am I imposing dominant-culture norms?
• Have I created space for the family to disagree with me?
