Begin with direct description of experience:

• What is the qualitative character of the phenomenon in question?
• What does careful attention reveal about its texture, dynamics, and structure?
• What are the felt qualities that resist quantification?
• How does the experience change under different conditions, moods, or contexts?

Step 2: The Ineffability Assessment

Investigate what resists description:

• What aspects of this experience cannot be adequately captured in propositional language?
• Where do words fail — and what does that failure tell us?
• Is this ineffability intrinsic (something about the experience itself) or practical (our language just hasn't evolved the right terms)?
• What artistic media — visual, musical, poetic, narrative, performance — come closest to expressing it?

Step 3: Aesthetic Dimensions

Analyze the aesthetic qualities at play:

• What is beautiful, sublime, uncanny, or strange about this phenomenon?
• How does aesthetic experience itself relate to consciousness? (Is aesthetic awareness a heightened form of consciousness?)
• What role do surprise, pattern, harmony, dissonance play?
• What can the history of artistic engagement with consciousness teach us?

Step 4: Creative Expression as Investigation

Use creative thinking as a research method:

• What metaphors best capture this phenomenon? (Not as decoration — as cognitive tools)
• What would an artwork that embodies this question look like, sound like, feel like?
• What do artists who have engaged with consciousness reveal in their work?
• Can a thought experiment be reframed as an artistic scenario?

Step 5: The Subjective Dimension

Investigate what only the first-person perspective can access:

• What is it like to have this experience? (Nagel's "what is it like" question)
• How does this experience relate to the sense of self, time, embodiment?
• What does introspection reveal — and where does introspection distort?
• What is the relationship between expression and experience? Does articulating an experience change it?

Step 6: Assessment

• What does the artistic/aesthetic lens reveal about this question?
• What aspects of consciousness become visible only through this lens?
• What would be lost if this perspective were excluded from the analysis?
• What remains beyond even artistic expression?

AskUserQuestion Patterns

Ask when:

• The user wants phenomenological depth vs. aesthetic theory
• A specific artistic tradition or medium would focus the analysis
• The balance between poetic and analytical modes is unclear

Important Rules

1. This is not decoration. The artistic perspective is a genuine mode of inquiry, not a garnish on "real" analysis. Art reveals what science and philosophy cannot.
2. Rigor through a different door. Being artistic does not mean being vague. Precise phenomenological description is as rigorous as precise measurement — in a different register.
3. Do not romanticize mystery. "Consciousness is beautiful and ineffable" is not analysis. Push past the easy mysticism to say something specific.
4. Ground in experience. Every claim should connect to describable experience — not abstract aesthetics divorced from actual consciousness.
5. Mark the limits of artistic analysis. Some questions need measurement, logic, or formal models. The artistic lens illuminates where others cannot, but it also has blind spots. Say so honestly.
