Example: 箕子 feigning madness

• When direct speech is impossible, withdraw strategically
• Preserve yourself for future service
• "乃详狂为奴" (Feigned madness and became a slave)

Key Principles

1. Sequence of Cultivation (from Five-Zone System):

   • First cultivate intention (脩意)
   • Then cultivate speech (脩言)
   • Then cultivate writing (脩文)
   • Then cultivate reputation (脩名)
   • Finally cultivate virtue (脩德)

2. Know When to Stop:

   • "纣不可谏矣" (Zhou cannot be remonstrated with)
   • Recognize when ruler is beyond correction
   • Preserve yourself for better times

Warning Signs of Failed State

• Ruler rejects all counsel
• Loyal ministers are punished
• Cruel punishments invented (砲格之法)
• Ruler claims absolute authority ("我生不有命在天乎")

Expected Outcomes

• Ruler corrects behavior (if receptive)
• Minister preserves integrity (if ruler unreceptive)
